DESIGN PROCESS 2 - COLLABORATIVE - DESIGN BOARD CRITIQUE

In todays collaborative session we reviewed the effectiveness of the design boards prepared for the submission of the fast approaching YCN live briefs.

For the session me Joe and Jake prepared three proposal style design boards focusing on showcasing our final outcome, its function and any supporting proposals.

DESIGN BOARS;

All written annotation was added during the critiquing process.

During the session we were divided into small critique groups in which we reviewed each others project design boards. Unlike other sessions we were placed into groups that had no previous knowledge of our projects direction, and so participants of the critique were reviewing our design boards from a completely uninformed perspective. As the pair reviewing the design boards had no knowledge of the project the effectiveness of the boards communication was put to the test.

While reviewing the boards comments and suggestions were written onto feedback sheets.

FEEDBACK SHEETS;

FEEDBACK ANALYSIS

Below is my personal analysis of what I believe to be the most important points received from the two feedback sheets.

Sheet one important points;

Do not justify the text alignment.

  • Unfortunately, as we rushed to produce the boards for the session I did not have time to type set the text properly, and so the text consisted of a mix of large spaces and tightly packed lines. I believe that justified lines of type will be more appropriate when the text has been set correctly.

The layout of your boards is not consistent & needs more consideration.

  • When designing the set of final boards I will create a set of layouts that will then be applied consistently on all boards.

Make instruction images clearer as we don't know whats what.

  • In response to the criticism we are planning to create a set of simple icon style illustrations that will function as instructional visual props to support text based information. Furthermore, the icons can then be consistently applied to both the booklet and design boards to help establish a coherent project identity.

Use colour to help differentiate between illustrations.

  • A good suggestion that will be applied to help users to differentiate between illustrations but also give the icons context to the paper in which they represent.

Sheet two important points;

Very hard to understand the concept.

  • As we presented our projects concept in detail last session we prepared three design boards focused on showcasing the final outcome and any current proposals we are developing. Therefore, on the boards that we presented the concept was only briefly covered making it hard to get a good grasp of where the project is heading or why. On the boards submitted for the competition we plan to devote a design board specifically communicating our concept.

No mention of the audience.

  • Again, this is an aspect that will be covered in detail on the concept design board.

Finally, after a short break we reviewed the common design board problems highlighted during the criticism.

CLASS LIST;

  • Alignment.
  • Image resolution.
  • Image quality.
  • Type setting.
  • Spelling and punctuation mistakes.
  • Board numbers & names.
  • Written information need to be refined.
  • Landscape vs portrait, which is more appropriate?
  • Refine images, only show the best - Impact.
  • Consistency of layout/images.
